The branching workflow (dev branch → prod merge) is unmatched. Vitess scales horizontally. But: in 2024 they killed the free tier, pricing started high, and open-source MySQL alternatives (Neon for Postgres, Tidbyt) caught up on DX. If you need Vitess sharding, nothing else is close. If you don't, Postgres on Neon or Supabase is cheaper and simpler.
